Mr. Nackel spoke on the mathematician's role in the electronics industry. Mr. Haney described the role of the mathematician in the business world. Both said that there are many opportunities in their respective industries for individuals at all levels from bachelor's to Ph.D. They agreed that mathematicians are especially valued because of their ability to use analytical skills to solve complex problems. They also agreed that higher level, abstract mathematics courses (such as real analysis and abstract algebra) are very important in developing such skills.
Both speakers made themselves available on March 27 and 28 to speak individually with undergraduate and graduate students.
