Reginald McGee Powers Up His Teaching
05-11-2011
Second year mathematics Ph.D. student Reginald McGee was selected to work with the Gifted Education Research Institute in the College of Education this past spring as an instructor in the Super Saturday program for kids.
He taught a special new course for 5th and 6th graders on alternative energy called "Power It Up." He had the responsibility of writing the course curriculum from scratch.
"I wanted to make the course really enjoyable for the students and very hands-on," says McGee. "Two activities required an Eitech Solar Powered Construction Set and Solar Powered Grasshopper kits."
McGee's plans were over budget for the program, so he solicited help from faculty and staff in the Math Department and College of Science. With the help of several donors, his plans were funded and the course was a big hit.
